Accessibility & Scholarship
In June 2018, the Salon started as a Meet Up group out of Ali's house in Logan Circle. It was a vibrant once-a-week gathering and the group quickly grew to more than 1,000 writers looking for community and accountability.
In the fall of 2019, we made the bold move to open the Salon as a living room-styled studio in Dupont Circle where writers could find dedicated space and time any day of the week. This, of course, meant taking on the expenses of rent and utilities, insurance and technology, cleaning and upkeep (and snacks, lots of snacks!). So that's when we introduced memberships. |
Accessibility has always been a cornerstone of what we're about.
Accessible to all genres and all stages of writing, to all ages, races, and cultural backgrounds, to extraverts and introverts, and no matter one's financial situation. So though membership supports the Salon so we can support writers, we offer scholarships to those in need. If you're going through a life transition - such as partially-employed as you care for a loved one, unexpectedly in between jobs, recovering from or managing a health condition, or are just getting on your feet after graduating - we want to make sure you're still able to come write with us. |
At the Salon, we operate in seasons in terms of our groups, calendar of events, and evaluating how we best support writers. Our scholarships are similarly offered for three months at a time.
If you'd like a partial or full scholarship, simply fill out the become a member form and reach out by email at hello at dcwriterssalon.com. And please let us know if there are other ways we can foster accessibility, as we're always open to feedback. We'd love to have you as part of the community and to help you make space and time for all that you want and need to write. |
